How Case Managers Support Clients in Education Through EHCPs

If your child has additional needs, you’ve probably heard about EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans). You’ve also probably heard how complicated, slow, and frustrating the process can be. At Blue Skies Case Management & Care, our case managers are here to make it easier for you and to make sure your child gets the support they truly need.

We know how important it is for children and young people to feel supported at school or college, not just to “cope,” but to learn, grow, and enjoy their education. That’s why helping families through the EHCP process is something we take seriously.

What's an EHCP?

What’s an EHCP?

An EHCP is a legal document for children and young people up to age 25 who need extra help in school because of a disability, medical condition, or additional learning needs. It brings together their education, health, and care needs all in one place and sets out exactly what support they should receive.

But getting one and getting it right isn’t always straightforward. That’s where a case manager can really help.

How We Support You Through the EHCP Process

Help with Starting the Process
We know the application process can feel overwhelming. Your case manager can help you discuss your child's needs with the SENCO and the school teacher.  Usually, the school teacher will make the referral for you, but when required, the case manager will write the request to the local authority, gather the right reports, and explain what to expect.

Organising the Right Assessments
We work closely with therapists and other professionals to make sure the EHCP includes a full picture of your child’s needs, not just in school, but also their health, mobility, behaviour, and daily care.

Checking the Plan is Right
When the local authority sends a draft EHCP, we go through it with you. We’ll help make sure it’s accurate, clear, and includes everything your child needs, especially not vague statements or missing support.

Attending Meetings With You
Whether it’s an annual review or a meeting with school, your case manager can attend with you (or on your behalf) to speak up for your child and make sure their needs are being taken seriously.

Support Through Transitions
We’re also here when it’s time to move from primary to secondary, school to college, or into adult services. These changes can be tricky, but we’ll help you plan ahead and keep support in place.

Why Having a Case Manager Makes a Difference with EHCP Applications

Why Having a Case Manager Makes a Difference

EHCPs can unlock vital support, teaching help, therapy, equipment, transport, and more. But getting there often involves chasing paperwork, going back and forth with the local authority, and having to fight for what your child needs.

It’s not unusual for an EHCP application to be refused outright. In Devon, for example, over 50% of new EHCP applications are rejected initially, and under 5% are completed within the 20-week legal deadline. In 2023, out of about 2,148 applications, only 1,059 were issued.

That’s where a case manager can be a game-changer, by helping you navigate the appeal process or, in some cases, handling it on your behalf. Here’s how they can support you:

  • Recommend an experienced solicitor who specialises in EHCP appeals.

  • Help organise the evidence needed—therapy reports, school feedback, medical advice.

  • Stand by you through tribunal processes, helping to present a clear, strong case.

Parents who’ve had to appeal often find the process emotionally draining and complex. Having someone to guide you through it, point out pitfalls, and offer firm support can make all the difference.

When you have a case manager, you don’t have to do it alone. We’re there to take the pressure off and stand in your corner.
