LifeVac In
Care Settings
At Blue Skies Case Management & Care, safety is central to everything we do. We support individuals with complex needs and understand the importance of having appropriate risk management strategies in place.
As part of this approach, we consider a range of safety measures, including awareness of devices such as LifeVac, where appropriate.
LifeVac is a portable, non-powered suction device designed to help remove airway obstructions during a choking emergency.
It is intended to be used when standard first aid procedures, such as back blows and abdominal thrusts, have not been effective.
The device is designed for use on adults and children and is increasingly considered within care settings, schools and home environments where individuals may be at higher risk of choking.
Important Information:
LifeVac is intended as an additional aid and should only be used after recommended choking response techniques have been attempted.
It does not replace standard first aid procedures, and emergency medical assistance should always be sought in line with current guidance.
What is LifeVac?
LifeVac In Care Environments
In care settings, particularly where individuals have complex needs, the risk of choking may be higher due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
In these situations, having clear protocols, appropriate training and access to additional supportive equipment can help improve overall safety and confidence.
LifeVac may be considered as part of a wider risk management strategy, alongside established first aid procedures and clinical guidance.
Our Approach to Safety
At Blue Skies Case Management & Care, we take a proactive and structured approach to safety and risk management.
We work with families, professionals and multidisciplinary teams to:
Assess individual risk factors
Develop appropriate care and support plans
Ensure staff training reflects the needs of the individual
Promote awareness of emergency response procedures
Where appropriate, this may include guidance on additional safety equipment as part of a broader care plan.
Training and Emergency Preparedness
All care staff are trained to respond appropriately in emergency situations, including choking incidents, using recognised first aid procedures.
We emphasise the importance of:
Following established choking response protocols
Responding quickly and confidently in an emergency
Understanding when additional measures may be required
Awareness of devices such as LifeVac can form part of this wider training approach, ensuring staff feel prepared and supported when managing high-risk situations.
